“How do you protect your energy prior to going into a space where there will be a lot of people? Park, party, concert etc?

  from T. R.

Energetic self-protection is very important for everyone but especially for energy workers and empathic/psychically developed people.  So often we go out to a crowded place and the energies around us can have a huge impact on us physically, spiritually or even emotionally.  Too often we forget to shield, or protect, ourselves.

The way I like to describe being in public without being energetically protected is like walking around in a white suit just after a hard rain.  People go by you, stomping in the puddles and mud.  You end up getting splashed with that mud and mess and your nice, clean white suit is now covered with the messes of other people.

If you protect yourself, that is much less likely to happen.

There are a myriad of methods you can use to protect yourself but I’m going to share with you what I do.

Quite some time ago, I spent an entire weekend at an enormous psychic fair and, at the time, was unaware of how to properly protect myself from the energies around me.   At the end of the first day, I was so covered in other people’s stuff, or mud on my white suit, that in the middle of a crowded restaurant, for not apparent reason, I broke down in tears.  All the emotional baggage that I had been exposed to on that first day completely overwhelmed me.

The next morning, a friend and veteran psychic took one look at me and declared that I had a rough night and it was because I had gotten “slimed” by all the energy the previous day.  She sure was right.  She sat me down and told me that every time I go out in public to visualize the following:

I see a swirling wind, like a cyclone, around me and when it clears, a crystal of my choosing, such as Selenite, surrounds me.  It’s open above for connection to the Divine and open below for grounding and connection to the earth.  No negative energy is able to penetrate this barrier, but all positive energies may flow in to me and mine flow out to those which whom I’m in contact.

The swirling happens a second time and a second crystal of my choosing surrounds me.  This one is surrounding the first one as a double layer of protection.  Again, it’s open both above and below.  No negative energies can penetrate this defense.

Finally a third swirling occurs and I’m surrounded by another crystal of my choosing.  This one is around both the other two and is also open above and blow.  No negative energies may penetrate this barrier and all my positive energies may still radiate outward to those around me.

At first it could take a good 15-20 minutes for this to take hold in my mind.  But over time, it is now a very quick process to create that barrier.  And it works like a champ.  Give it a try and let me know what you think.

Monthly Energetic Practice Question:

“Can Reiki be given to someone going through chemotherapy?  Will it interfere with the chemicals?”   from N. T.

That’s an excellent questions and the answer is a resounding Yes.  Reiki can absolutely be given to someone who is going through chemotherapy. The flow of healing energy cannot interfere with the therapy process nor the drugs involved.  Remember that Reiki cannot cause harm in any way.

I highly recommend Reiki for chemotherapy patients.  Often chemotherapy causes unpleasant side effects that can include hair loss, nausea, muscle pain and anxiety.  Reiki can help to sooth these side effects.  It can help lower blood pressure and calm a person, reducing stress and anxiety.  It can also ease symptoms of nausea and discomfort.  It can even reduce aches or muscular pain.

When a chemotherapy patient is relaxed and soothed by the gentle, loving energy of Reiki, their bodies are more accepting to the healing qualities not only of the energy but of their medical treatment.

This month some excellent questions have come up.  Thank you so much!  Here are two questions I thought might be of the most interest to everyone.

Question One:

I rarely practice my Reiki... both self healing and on others. Is my chakra still open?  Can I start over again to make the chakras active again?

~ Setia P.

Setia, once you have studied and been attuned to Reiki, you are always Reiki; it cannot and will not go away.  There is no need to start over again, though you are always welcome to do so.  And honestly, if you are out of practice as you say, it might help to reinforce the information you learned previously if you do take a Reiki class again.  I would be happy to welcome you to one of my classes if you would like.

As a Reiki facilitator and, more importantly in this scenario, I feel the need to remind you that you should be doing Reiki every day. If you don’t share Reiki with anyone else, that’s okay.  But you should be doing Self-Reiki as often as possible… ideally every day.  As I state in my soon to be released book, “Reiki and Beyond”, you don’t have to spend a whole lot of time doing Self-Reiki; a few minutes when you are able are enough.  Not ideal, but enough.  Keep that energy flowing and working you’re your body, on your mind, on your spirit. We just cannot get enough pampering and every little bit of Self-Reiki will do you a world of good.

And if you would like to re-take a Reiki level I class, just let me know.

Questions Two:

Can I do Reiki on a person with a pacemaker?   My heart says nothing will go wrong with Reiki but my therapist head knows to be super careful . A friend of mine in her 40s is in definite need of assistance and her drs don't think it warrants putting anything in writing because, "Reiki isn’t a real thing anyway".

~ Amanda D.

Amanda, that’s an excellent question and the short and simple answer is no, there is no conflict between the energy of Reiki and the energy generated by a pacemaker.

But let’s take a slightly deeper look at this question.

I am thrilled that you’re concerned about this and feel the need to be certain not to hurt anyone.  Remember, Reiki cannot cause harm.  A person cannot even get too much Reiki as it will stop flowing when necessary.

When I have worked with clients who have pacemakers, I have felt the energy they emit.  To me it felt like static over their heart.  Or like turbulence for an airplane, if you will.  But I’ve never felt any negativity or conflicting energies.

I certainly understand your concern and the first time I encountered a pacemaker I was a bit intimidated to place my hands on that client’s chest.  I quickly got past that trepidation, however.

As I discuss in my forthcoming book, “Reiki and Beyond”, whenever you’re in doubt, double check that your intention is set for your client’s greatest and highest good.  But if, for any reason, you’re uncomfortable touching a client, you are always able to “hover” over the area in question rather than make a physical contact. Don’t forget, contact is not a requirement for Reiki to flow successfully.

Also, don’t forget to work with your guides.  Ask them directly if it’s okay to proceed when the client has a pacemaker, or any other issue.  Listen to them; they won’t steer your wrong.

Thank you for submitting your questions about Reiki and energy work.  I’m looking forward to more of them.  So if you have a question you’d like to ask, please email me at:  This email address is being protected from spambots. With your help, I would like to start a new feature in the monthly newsletters.  I’m thinking it should be a sort of a “Dear Abby” style of Q & A on the subject of energy work, energetic practices, Reiki and the like.

Often non-energy workers, energy workers and Reiki facilitators alike ask me different questions. They range anywhere from what is energy work to how does Reiki work.  Reiki facilitators often ask about various experiences they’ve had or wonder what to do next.

So if you have any questions, please just email me and I’ll answer them the best I can here in the newsletter.  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

To begin, I’ll address a question that comes up quite often.  How do I ground?

Life can be messy. Life can be chaotic.  Life can be busy.  Life can be… well, you get the idea.  And I sure don’t have to tell you how complicated life can be.  Goodness knows we’ve all had our share of ups and down.

Just living life and getting through the rough patches, and sometimes even the smooth patches, can become stressful and can leave us feeling ungrounded and stressed out.

Great Conjunction BackyardI thought I’d share a little bit of what I’ve been dealing with recently.   A few weeks ago my father had hip replacement surgery.  For most people, this is not too big of an issue. However, my father is 80, diabetic and a smoker.  These are things that set off warning alarms for surgeons and anesthesiologists.  But to keep this brief, suffice to say the surgery was “concerning”.

The surgery went very well and without a hitch.  Recovery also has been perfect.  The problem has been his rehabilitation to strengthen his new hip and the leg. First, he vehemently refused to go to a rehab facility.  Getting him to understand the importance of going and finally to agree to it was a battle. One in rehab, he will only exercise during the therapy sessions, not when he’s relaxing in his room… as advised. His attitude:  why should I do it again, I’ve already done it.

Princess Irene TulipDad’s now been in rehab for just over a week.   The other day we had a meeting with the head of the therapy department and he advised that, because of the slow rehabilitation of the hip and leg, my dad stay in the center for another two weeks.  He explained that if the joint and leg aren’t properly rehabbed and strengthened, he may not be able to walk well.  My father became irate and absolutely refused, but after some coaxing, did agree to finish out the current week.

I worry that my dad won’t be able to be independent for long.  I worry that he may be in pain.  I worry that he may fall.  I worry, period.  And I become ungrounded and very stressed out.

So how do I ground and center?  I’d like to say that it’s very easy… and technically it is.  The tough part is just allowing it to come.  But here are a few things that I like to do to ground and center myself.

Weather permitting, each day I like to take a walk in the yard.  Enjoy the beauty of all the flowers and blooming trees.  Experience the fragrances of all the blooms.  Feel the cool, soothing breeze on my skin and through my hair.

Helo Playing with a stick at Great ConjunctionI enjoy taking time to play with my dog. Not to think about anything beyond the fun and silliness of the games we play; tug-of-war, fetch, etc…  I also like to focus not just on the moment, but on the amazing beauty of the communication between man and animal.

I like to give myself Reiki. It doesn’t have to be a long session, though that’s nice.  Sometimes I’ll just sit down and close my eyes and ask the Universe and my spirit guides to blanket me with the loving energy of the Universe.  Take a few deep breaths.  It’s surprisingly energizing.

Take the time to water each of my plants, individually.  By that I mean to look at each plant, examine the leaves and be aware of the changes, the growth, the color.  Be in the moment with each of my plants.  Are there new shoots?  Does it need to be repotted yet?  I also like to touch the leaves and feel their textures.

Sometimes I’ll steal a few minutes away and do something just for me, like read a few pages in a book or listen to some of my favorite music.

These are all things that help me to ground.  They’re easy to do.  Again, the trick is to stop your mind from going places it doesn’t need to be or to stop focusing on things I cannot do anything about right then.  Just focus on the moment.  Focus on the activity.  Reconnect with the planet, with the minutiae of life.

Give it a try some time. It’s very relaxing and helps you get back to center.

And don’t forget, if you have any questions at all, large or small… please email me at: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
